How to Clean a Fitted Hat: A Quick & Easy Guide for Decorators and Buyers

By: CapBargain Posted on: Mar 9, 2026
Discover the safest ways to clean wholesale fitted hats without ruining their shape in this quick CapBargain guide. Tossing caps in the washing machine often shrinks cotton twill and warps structured polyester. Spot-cleaning is the best method to preserve premium OTTO CAP blanks for custom embroidery. The guide also covers fabric-specific tricks, like using a vinegar mix for poly twills, while strictly warning against bleach and heated dryers. Follow these straightforward steps to keep your bulk headwear inventory looking great.
The right cap can complete almost any outfit. A dingy cap can ruin any outfit too. Even if it has catchy embroidery on it. If you buy hats wholesale or run an embroidery shop, it’s important to know how to clean hats. Not all caps can be cleaned as desired by tossing them into the washing machine. This blog breaks down how you can clean fitted hats including fitted baseball caps, without destroying its shape.

Why It’s Important to Clean Hats the Right Way

The easy thing to do is to machine wash caps. Most top-quality caps including many styles in CapBargain’s wholesale selection are machine-washable. But that doesn’t make it the right way to clean a hat. On the contrary, machine washing can ruin hats, especially structured ones made of cotton. The agitation can rapidly shrink cotton twills and even warp polyester structures. Some of the damage can’t be reversed either.
If you have a dozen or more hats to clean, machine washing might seem like a convenient option. But it ultimately doesn’t save your investment on the hats.

Cleaning OTTO CAP Blank Polyester Hats

OTTO CAP's T4/T8 polyesters, on many fitted cap styles in our collection, are engineered to resist dust better than standard fabrics. But they still require gentle care to keep their stretch and sleek finishes intact. The best way to keep them looking fresh is spot-cleaning. Only then can they deliver that impact they are meant to. We also don’t recommend embroidering on these hats if the front panel is wet, as there is a chance for the fabric to pucker around the threads.

How to Spot Clean Hats

This is the safest OTTO CAP care routine for daily grime. And it doesn’t apply only to fitted caps.
How to Spot Clean Hats
  • Prep: Make sure to always start dry. For starters, you can use a brush to get rid of loose dirt. Some of our customers use a horsehair brush for the job. For stubborn particles, you can use a strip of packing tape. Once the particles are off, pre-treat the cap to remove visible stains. Mixing a mild dish soap with cold water and using microfiber cloth is a great way to remove stains.
  • Cleaning Sweatbands: Sweatbands trap the most odor on any cap, be it fitted or adjustable. We recommend dabbing the inside band firmly with a soapy, soft cloth. You can soak the sweatband. But this can reduce its durability a lot. We don’t recommend it.
  • Rinse: Grab a new, lightly damp cloth to wipe away all soap residue. Be careful not to soak the crown when doing this.
  • Dry: Correct shape is everything. Air-dry your hat, ideally on a plastic hat form. Alternatively, you can also stuff a clean hand towel inside a small bowl and place the hat tightly over it. Let the cap sit undisturbed for 24 hours. Keep it away from direct sunlight or heavy heat sources.

Advanced Methods by Fabric

Different cap materials need different cleaning approaches.

  • Cotton Twill: The best method is to use mild dish soap and a soft-bristled brush. Hand-wash the cap in cold water, if absolutely necessary. Hot water causes major, irreversible shrinkage in cotton fibers.

  • T4/T8 Poly Twill: Try a lukewarm water and plain white vinegar mix. A simple 1:1 ratio naturally repels static and lingering dust. This mixture cuts through stubborn scalp oils without leaving a soapy residue.

  • Mesh Trucker Backs: Use a gentle sponge directly on the plastic mesh. We don’t recommend dipping front structured panels in water.

What NOT to Do When Cleaning Caps

You’ll be surprised if you hear about all the stories we get from our customers, some of which are associated with cleaning caps. Like there are a few things you CAN do to clean caps while keeping their shape, there are also a few things you must NOT do.
Here are a few important ones.
  • Avoid washing machines and tumble dryers. The agitation once again can damage brims and shrink a cap a lot more than you think.
  • Never use liquid bleach or bleach pens on polyester or poly blend fabrics. Bleach can permanently discolor the finish on certain styles.
  • Avoid using hairdryers. Heat can set gross stains deep into stretch twills. Heat can also the interior elastic bands that are meant to hold the hat to your head.

Pro Tips for Bulk Buyers

Always test your cleaning method on a single sample blank before running a massive batch. You don’t necessarily have to clean some OTTO CAP styles periodically to get rid of odor. Many OTTO FLEX and OTTO COMFY FIT sweatbands feature built-in anti-odor technology. They require far less frequent cleaning overall.
If you do end up cleaning your caps, make sure you dry them completely. Store them in breathable bags if possible. This not only prevents dust buildup but also keeps the caps retail-ready.
If you want to keep your OTTO wholesale fitteds crisp between orders, run cleaning tests on a sample first. Request fabric care sample kits featuring our T4/T8 styles for your cleaning tests today. Explore CapBargain and discover durable styles like the 19-4 OTTO COMFY FIT baseball cap or 11-2 OTTO FLEX baseball cap blanks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Machine Wash a Fitted Hat?

We don’t recommend it. Washers can damage brims and shrink cotton twill. OTTO poly fabrics warp less but may lose critical structure. It’s best to spot-clean or hand-wash caps.

What's the safest way to clean sweatband stains on caps?

Use mild soap mixed with lukewarm water on a microfiber cloth. First take care of the inside band where odor builds and then rinse with a damp cloth. We recommend air-drying afterwards. There are some styles in our collection that feature sweatbands with anti-odor technology. These need not be washed frequently to clear the odor.

Will cleaning damage embroidery or prints?

Not if you are careful. Around decorated panels, go for spot-clean. Practically you may not be able to avoid soaking the delicate areas of the cap. But avoid it if you can. We recommend testing on blanks first. The OTTO CAP premium poly twill styles in our collection are designed to hold decoration post-clean much better than standard cotton blanks from most other brands at higher price points.

How do I dry a fitted hat without losing shape?

You can try stuffing the crown tightly with a towel. It’s best to air-dry indoors away from sun and heat. Ideally for 24 hours.

Can I use a dishwasher for trucker hats?

If you are doing this, make sure the mesh-backs go only on the top-rack, ideally inside a plastic cage. We don’t recommend doing this with structured caps.

How to remove stubborn stains on polyester hats?

A 1:1 vinegar and water mix safely pretreats dark oils and dust on most polyester fabrics. Gently brush the cap before rinsing and avoid bleach totally if the hat has a sleek finish.

How often should I clean blank hats in bulk?

If you display your stock, we recommend spot-cleans every month for blank hats. The hats need to be deep cleaned and dried thoroughly before embroidery. For hat styles featuring OTTO's specialized anti-odor sweatbands, cleaning frequently is not necessary if it’s the odor you want to get rid of.
