How to Wash a Baseball Cap Without Ruining the Shape

Sweat, sunscreen, hair oil, dust, rain, and daily wear build up faster on baseball caps than most people notice. That means frequent laundry. And therein lies the problem.
Structured baseball caps, foam trucker hats, dad hats, embroidered caps, and bucket hats should not be washed the same way. The wrong method can bend the brim, collapse the crown, fade the fabric, or damage custom embroidery.

Check the Care Label and Brim Type First
The absolute first thing to do before washing any hat is to check the care label. Manufacturers add the safest starting points for the fabric, trim, and construction on these labels.
The next step is to check the brim. Though all of the baseball styles you will find in our wholesale hats selection feature high-density, flexible plastic brims, there are older or vintage caps from other manufacturers that still use cardboard bills. Cardboard can warp, soften, or break down when soaked.
Here are a few pointers. Tap or flick the brim gently.
- A plastic brim often feels flexible and sharper.
- A cardboard brim may sound dull and feel stiff.
If the cap is vintage or you are unsure, do not soak it.
This “tap test” isn’t the definitive way to go about it. It serves more like a warning sign, not a guarantee. The label and age of the cap matter more.
After you are done checking the care label and the brim, it’s time to give the cap structure a look. Structured caps have a firm crown that can lose shape with machine agitation. Unstructured hats like dad hats are softer, but they can still wrinkle or shrink if washed roughly. Foam-front trucker hats are a bit different because of the foam on the front panel. How to Hand Wash a Baseball Cap
Hand washing is what we recommend for most baseball caps to our customers. It gives you control and helps protect the shape.
This is what you should do:
- Fill a sink or basin with cool water.
- Add a small amount of mild liquid detergent.
- Dip a soft cloth, sponge, or toothbrush into the water.
- Spot clean the sweatband first.
- Gently scrub stained areas in small circles.
- Clean the crown and panels without crushing the cap.
- Rinse with cool water using a damp cloth or gentle stream.
- Blot with a clean towel.
- Reshape the crown before drying.
For sweat stains, let the detergent sit on the sweatband for a few minutes before brushing. Do not use bleach unless the care label specifically allows it because bleach can damage color, fabric, stitching, and logos.
Some of our customers made the mistake of soaking their caps for a long time. If the cap is structured, embroidered or made of wool, soaking them is a bad idea.
How to Machine Wash a Baseball Cap
Can you wash a baseball cap in the washing machine? Sometimes. But we can say with certainty that machine washing should be the backup method, not the default.
Only machine wash a cap if:
- The care label allows it.
- The brim is plastic.
- The fabric is washable.
- The cap is not vintage.
- The cap is not wool.
- The cap is not heavily structured.
- The cap does not have heavy embroidery, patches, leather trim, or puff decoration.
If the cap passes those checks, follow these steps to machine wash safely:
- Place the cap in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase.
- Wash it only with lightweight items.
- Use cold water.
- Choose a gentle cycle.
- Use mild liquid detergent.
- Avoid bleach.
- Remove the cap as soon as the cycle ends.
- Reshape and air dry.
Remember not to wash caps with other garments like towels, jeans or heavier garments. Do not wash them with shoes either. These items can damage the crown or the brim.
And most importantly, never put a baseball cap in the dryer. The heat from the dryer will likely shrink the fabric or warp the brim. There’s even been reports that the heat damaged the embroidery on the cap as well. Dryers ruin the cap shape.
How to Clean an Embroidered or Customized Cap
Embroidered hats need extra care. The thread, backing, fabric, and crown structure can all react differently to water, friction, and heat.
Before cleaning an embroidered or custom decorated cap, we recommend starting with a colorfastness test. To do that, dampen a white cloth with cool water and mild detergent. Dab a hidden area of the cap and a small part of the embroidery. If color transfers to the cloth, that’s your cue to stop. Go for light spot cleaning only.
For custom embroidered hats:
- Use cool water.
- Use mild detergent.
- Clean around the stitching gently.
- Avoid hard scrubbing over thread.
- Do not twist or wring the cap.
- Avoid long soaking.
- Keep the cap away from dryers, irons, steam, and direct heat.
If the cap has patches, leather patches, printed panels, puff embroidery, metallic thread, or heat-applied decorations, be even more careful. Spot cleaning is usually safer than full washing.
For heavily embroidered custom caps, hand washing is the better option as machine washing can pull at the stitches or distort the crown.
How to Dry a Baseball Cap So It Keeps Its Shape
Washing is only the first phase to keep your cap looking fresh. Drying is just as important, because even a clean cap can still get ruined if it dries in the wrong shape. There’s a little more to it.
For starters, know that every baseball cap has to be air-dried. And you do that by blotting excess water with a soft towel. Reiterating what we mentioned earlier, be careful not to twist the brim or squeeze the crown.
Once all that’s done, reshape the cap. You can do that by placing it over some items you might already have with you - like a clean bowl, a jar, a small ball, or maybe even a cap form, if you have one. If you only have a towel with you, just roll it up and place the cap over it.
Then dry it in a well-ventilated area. Keep it away from dryers, heaters, hair dryers, direct high heat, and long periods of strong sun. Too much sunlight can fade darker colors.
For embroidered caps, keep the logo facing up or outward so the stitching dries cleanly and does not press into a towel crease.
How Often Should You Wash a Baseball Cap?
This is a question we often get from most of our customers. The answer is that a baseball cap need not be fully washed after every wear. You can wash the cap completely when there are visible sweat stains, odor, dirt, or noticeable buildup.
For regular care:
- Wipe the sweatband after sweaty use.
- Spot clean fresh stains quickly.
- Let damp caps air dry before storing.
- Store caps where the crown is not crushed.
- Avoid leaving hats in hot cars.
If you wear a cap for workouts, outdoor work, coaching, or summer events, make sure to clean the sweatband more often. Sweat and oil become harder to remove when they sit too long.
For occasional wear, light spot cleaning may be enough.
