Bucket Hat

A soft hat with a round crown and wide, downward sloping brim resembling a small bucket upside down. The hat has two metal eyelets on the sides, and its unique brim offers shade from the sun for the eyes as well as the face.

Buckram/Liner

Buckram is a fabric that makes up the interior lining of a hat, helping retain the hat’s structure. Buckram may not be present in all hats. It’s made of fabrics like satin, velvet, synthetic mesh, cotton or silk.

Button

It is a fabric-covered metal jewel on the top of the crown meant to hold the hat’s panels together. The button can also be plastic, and is generally covered with the hat’s fabric.

Canvas

A heavy-duty fabric typically made by blending either cotton or linen with a polymer. Canvas can have a plain weave or a tighter duck weave.

Closure

The closure is a component at the back of a hat that determines the hat’s fit and adjustability. The closure can be any type - from snapback and buckled to hook/loop or velcro.

Cotton

The most commonly used fabric to manufacture hats, cotton is known for being lightweight, soft and breathable. It’s naturally hypoallergenic, and can be blended with other materials like polyester or rayon to improve the hat’s durability and functionality. Some hats are made from washed or unwashed cotton. The former is softer yet duller while the latter has a smooth finish with a brighter look. Cotton works best during the hot and humid summer season.

Crown

The crown is basically the front area of the hat, situated right above the brim and on the head of the wearer. The component is made by sewing the panels of the hat together. Crown comes in two types - structured and unstructured.

  Structured crown - They are designed to retain the shape of the cap, even after it’s not in use. They are rigid at the front due to the buckram reinforcement underneath the front panels. Because of their bigger size, structured caps stand out better and are great for high-profile events.

  Unstructured crown - Because the crown doesn’t have a reinforcement underneath the panels, unstructured hats won’t retain their structure when not in use. Instead, these hats are designed to take the shape of the wearer’s head when worn. It’s preferred more for its laid-back appeal.

Dad Hat

The Dad Hat is a 6 panel, unstructured baseball hat known for its slightly curved brim unlike a classic baseball hat with a more prominent curve. Dad hats are typically made of washed cotton or canvas. They still remain popular for their vintage or nostalgic appeal.

Denim

Denim hats, as the name suggests, are made of denim - cotton in a twill weave of twisted yarns. The warp thread of the material is dyed with indigo, transforming it into denim fabric while the filling thread remains white. Denim is thicker and stronger than regular cotton.

Distressed Hat

Distressed hats are hats with fibers on the fabric strategically removed for a “torn” or “beaten” look. This distressing doesn’t affect the wearability in any way or the hat’s durability. It’s just an aesthetic touch for those who don’t want their hats to look new.

Eyelets

Eyelets can be seen as small holes on top of a hat. These holes can be metal or just reinforced stitching, and are meant to offer breathability.

Fitted Hat

With closed backs and stretchable fabric, fitted hats are designed to just “fit” or wrap around the wearer’s head perfectly. As such, these hats can’t be adjusted and one just has to buy a size that fits.

Jersey

It is a lightweight single-knit fabric made of cotton, wool or synthetic fibers, known for its softness and stretchability.

Nylon

Used to make thin and lightweight caps, nylon becomes popular during hot summer days. Hats made of this fabric are much more resistant to shrinkage and neither will they lose their original shape.

Panels

These are the triangular pieces stitched together to form the hat’s structure. There are 5 panel, 6 panel and 7 panel hats depending on the number of the panels on the hat.

  5 Panel Hat - With crowns having 5 panels, these caps replace two triangular panels of the six-panel hat with a single one for a seamless wide front panel. This front panel allows uninterrupted room for decoration, making 5 panel hats a great pick for customization.

  6 Panel Hat - 6 instead of 5 panels make a 6 panel hat. The seam running down the middle of the hat’s front is their common trait.

  7 Panel Hat - While the 6 panel has two panels on the front, the 7 panel hat has three - one central block and two smaller panels on its sides.

Polyester

Polyester is among the most widely used materials in the manufacture of hats and apparel. They are lighter, breathable and have excellent moisture-wicking. Polyester hats can absorb sweat, keep the skin dry and comfortable. Polyester or polyester blend hats, that are cheap, have a wrinkle-free finish. They are best suited for occasions related to sports and adventure.

Ponytail Hat

A ponytail hat has a hole at the back for a high ponytail. This allows wearers to keep their hair up higher and off the neck.

Profile

The slope of a cap’s crown, the profile comes in 3 types – low profile, medium or mid profile and high profile.

  Low profile hats have shallower crowns in the 2-3 inch range. The hat’s brim rests somewhere on the forehead when pulled down tight.

• 

  Medium profile denotes hats with a crown height of 3-4 inches, where the brim should reach roughly the top of the brow when pulled down tight.

• 

  High Profile hats have a crown height of more than 4 inches. These hats would reach to your eyes or further if pulled down tight.

Sandwich-Billed Hat

Sandwich-billed hats have a colored layer of material sandwiched in the brim. The top and bottom of the brim will have the same colors as the rest of the hat while the middle layer will have a different color that extends along the breadth of the hat.

Straw

Straw is made of material from various plants such as bamboo, wheatgrass, etc. and sometimes from synthetic fibers. Straw hats are fashionable, vintage and offer excellent protection for your head from the sun.

Snapback Hat

The Snapback Hat is a structured version of a baseball hat with an adjustable snap closure. They come in a variety of styles - flat-billed, curved billed, sandwich billed, mesh-backed, and more. You can go with curved bill snapback hats if you want something low-key and casual for daily use.

Sweatband/Inner Band

The sweatband is located inside just above the hat’s undervisor. The band absorbs sweat from the wearer’s head.

Trucker Hat

A trucker hat in many ways is similar to a baseball hat. The difference lies in the mesh-back and broader front panels. The front panels are usually made of foam or cotton twill. The mesh back of these hats keeps your heads cool during hot summer days. Foam front trucker caps are high profile and are great picks for custom decorations. Cotton twill front trucker caps are low profile, still customizable, and are best for casual occasions.

Twill

Cotton Twill Hats are made of cotton woven in parallel diagonal ribs, unlike regular cotton’s plain weave.

Visor/Bill/Brim/Peak

All four terms refer to the stiff protruding part from the base of the crown and extending outward. The brim provides shade and protection for the wearer. Wider brim offers a greater degree of shade for the face.

There are two common types of bills – curved bills & flat bills.

  Curved bill - Curved bill caps are those whose bills come with a slight curvature that can be further rolled to suit the individual wearer.

  Flat bill - Flat bill hats, as the name indicates, have a flat bill. Flat bill is more of a style preference in comparison to curved bill.

Wool

Natural, soft, durable and slightly elastic, wool hats are comparable to cotton hats in terms of feel, but are usually denser and hold heat more effectively.

Wool Blend

This is not 100% wool. It has one or more other fabrics blended into the wool; however, the warmth, integrity and the appearance of wool are sustained, making them more affordable yet still functional as wool itself.
